Were you surprised that a car accident led to your spine injury?

Injuries to various parts of the body could have life-changing impacts. In particular, if you suffer an injury to your spine, you could face issues with coordination, ability to move, ability to control certain bodily functions and numerous other effects. Often, a serious event leads to this type of injury taking place.

If you suffered a spinal cord injury in a car accident, you are not alone. In fact, car and motorcycle crashes account for nearly half of the spinal cord injuries that occur annually. Even if this type of injury did take place as the result of a crash, you could have had certain characteristics that put you at a higher risk of suffering this type of damage.

Were you predisposed to a spinal cord injury?

If the accident that caused your spinal cord injury was not considered overly severe, you may wonder how it could have led to this serious outcome. Unfortunately, some people may fall into certain categories that put them more at risk of suffering this type of harm. Those categories include:

  • Age between 16 and 30 or over 65: If your age falls into the range between 16 and 30 years old, you may have been more likely to suffer this type of injury as this range sees the most injuries of this type. However, you may also have been more susceptible if your age exceeds 65 years old.
  • Male: If your gender is male, you may also have been predisposed to this type of injury. Approximately 80 percent of individuals who suffer spinal cord injuries are male.
  • Bone or joint sufferer: If you have a disorder that causes you to suffer issues relating to your bones or joints, your risk of a spinal cord injury may have increased. Even relatively minor accidents could lead you to suffer a serious injury to your spine.

While these factors may not have directly led to your injury, any of them could potentially have put you at risk. When someone else's actions caused your injury-causing car accident, the incident may have proved more serious than initially thought, especially if symptoms of your spinal cord injury were not immediately apparent.

Can you seek compensation?

In many cases, when another driver causes a car accident that leads to serious injuries, the injured party has cause to pursue compensation against the driver considered at fault. If you believe that you have grounds to take such action, you may want to find out more information on your options for filing a personal injury claim.
