The severity spectrum of brain injuries

Just like any other injury, brain injuries can fall anywhere on a spectrum of severity. Determining the severity of one's brain injury is significant in that it allows medical professionals to prescribe an effective course of treatment. Additionally, those who are able to recognize the signs of traumatic brain injury may allow an individual or his or her loved ones to seek medical care much more quickly.

Minor brain injuries can present themselves in one of a number of ways. A sufferer may become dizzy or vomit, and he or she may be subjected to memory loss and lethargy. These brain injuries vary rarely, if ever, result in loss of consciousness.

If an individual suffers a blow to the head and does lose consciousness, then he or she may have suffered a moderate brain injury. Those with this type of injury may be unconscious for up to 24 hours. Additionally, medical tests may show contusions or brain bleeding, as well as other injuries to the brain.

A severe brain injury will be immediately noticeable. A victim will oftentimes become comatose, and tests will show that there is no sleep and awake cycle present while the victim is comatose. Merely because one's injury falls into this category does not mean that he or she will be considered brain dead or possess locked-in syndrome, although those conditions are a possibility. Instead, some individuals are able to come out of their coma and reclaim certain aspects of their lives.

Individuals whose traumatic brain injuries have been caused by the negligence of another may be able to recover compensation for their losses, which can include medical expenses and lost wages. For this reason, it is critical that these sufferers determine the full extent of their brain injury so that they can adequately and aggressively seek the damages they deserve. Those who want to learn more about pursuing a legal claim based on a brain or spinal cord injury can speak to a legal professional who is experienced in this particular area of the law.
