Traumatic brain injury and its effects

It doesn't take a decorated medical professional to know that brain injuries are quite serious. They can reshape an California resident's life, leaving him or her unable to perform tasks that were once a part of his or her daily life. Yet, although many of us know that a brain injury can leave a victim with severe limitations, the real impact of a traumatic brain injury is utterly staggering.

First of all, it is important to note how common traumatic brain injuries are and how severe they can be. According to the CDC, approximately 2.5 million people suffer from a traumatic brain injury each year. Sadly, these injuries contribute to almost a third of all injury-related fatalities in the U.S. The CDC estimates that about 5.3 million Americans currently suffer from the effects of traumatic brain injuries.

The physical effects of a TBI can be overwhelming, too. Nearly half of all individual who are hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury end up developing a disability within a year. All TBI victims are susceptible to certain physical impairments. These impairments can affect cognitive and motor functions, sensations, and emotions. This means that victim may be left suffering from depression, personality changes, hearing and vision impairment, difficulty coordinating and balancing, and/or trouble with his or her memory and attention.

Of course, medical care and rehabilitation may help ease the effects of a traumatic brain injury. Yet, this can be quite expensive, leaving many victims and their families facing the possibility of financial ruin. If the injury was caused by the negligence of another, though, then a personal injury lawsuit may be justified. If successful on such a claim, compensation may be recovered for the victim's damages, allowing him or her to find financial stability while he or she focuses on recovering as fully as possible.
