Could an app actually curb distracted driving?

It is amazing what we can do with our smartphone apps these days. We can hail a ride, meet someone special, get turn-by-turn directions and even get the latest headlines all with a swipe or two. With access to so much information in the palm of our hand, no wonder some of us are addicted to our phones.

However, this addiction can be dangerous when we are driving. The proliferation of distracted driving should be a clear indicator. After all, states have not enacted laws banning cell phone use behind the wheel to punish cell phone providers.

As ironic as it may sound, an app may actually be able to help us kick the distracted driving habit caused by our desire to have our phones when driving. A new app, Mojo, helps drivers learn more about their phone use patterns while they drive, and uses a number of motivators to help them develop better, safer habits. The app’s founder, TrueMotion, reports that 27,000 drivers across the country use the app, and a number of drivers have corrected their behavior since using it.

It remains to be seen whether Mojo (or any similar app) will have a significant impact on the epidemic of distracted driving, but one thing is certain: drivers have a legal duty to use reasonable care while behind the wheel, and this means limiting cell phone use while behind the wheel.  If a driver causes an accident by failing to use such care, the offending driver could be held liable.

If you have been injured by a distracted driver, an experienced personal injury attorney can advise you.
