You may recall last year's massive collapse at the San Ysidro border checkpoint on September 14, 2011. The collapse injured 11 people, including 6 employees when the canopy fell on top of 15 cars. The 30-year-old border crossing was undergoing a massive, $600 million improvement project by Hensel Construction Company. ABC Channel 10 San Diego released information pertaining to the report of the investigation by Cal/OSHA, in which blame for the massive collapse has been set on 3 companies, Hensel Phelps Construction, AMG Demolition & Environmental Services, Inc., and Miller Environmental.
The report revealed that Hensel Construction Company and AMG Demolition & Environmental Services, Inc. "… failed to correct an overloading hazard and failed to prevent the dangerous accumulation of demolition debris." And also sited Miller Environmental for "failed training and instruction that would have allowed their employees to identify the hazardous situation they were creating when they overloaded a scaffold they were working on." Most importantly we see in their report that Cal/OSHA also found the company routinely "allowed large amounts of removed ACM (asbestos containing materials) to remain un-bagged, uncollected for days at a time on the scaffold which employees were working" and "… failed to prevent dangerous accumulations of demolition debris on the scaffold." The risk of asbestos contamination from the exposure to the workers before the collapse even took place is serious. Asbestos contamination will often not present damage to the victim for many years down the road. The injuries sustained from this contamination could be incredibly serious and lead to possible cancer.
