According the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2009 nearly 36,000 American’s died, and millions others suffered injuries, as a result of 10.8 million accidents involving motor vehicles,  This alarming statistic makes us feel the need to share our thoughts on what you should do if you are injured in a car accident.

If you have been involved in a car accident, regardless of fault or injury present, always exchange information. Often times, a injury may not appear right away. The information you need to collect from the other party would be their name, phone number, driver’s license number, license plate number, insurance company, and policy number.

If you are injured in the accident, consult with an attorney as soon as practical. You should select an attorney that specializes in personal injury/auto accident cases. If the injury is serious, or potentially so, you will want to be protected early on. You may well be entitled to compensation from the at fault driver for the harms and losses suffered in the accident. All personal injury attorney’s handle these cases on a contingency basis, it will be of no burden to you without any expense until there is a recovery on your case. Also, remember to report the accident to your own insurance company as you may well be entitled to reimbursement under that policy for medical payments, uninsured/underinsured motorist and of course the repair of your vehicle.

If you are involved in a car accident, injured or not, please follow these recommendations:

  • Keep an “accident kit” in your car, simply a pen and paper for taking notes will suffice.
  • Always exchange information with other drivers involved — including name, phone number, driver’s license number, license plate number, insurance company, and policy number
  • File an accident report with the police, which could help speed up the claim process with your insurance company
  • If you are injured, seek medical attention immediately.
